For a standard YouTube video, YouTube Help currently recommends a 16:9 thumbnail at 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. Shorts use a 9:16 recommendation at 2160 × 3840 pixels. Podcast playlist thumbnails use a 1:1 ratio. Check the official upload guidance before publishing because platform requirements can change.
Current YouTube thumbnail dimensions
| Format | Recommended dimensions | Aspect ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 3840 × 2160 px | 16:9 |
| Shorts | 2160 × 3840 px | 9:16 |
| Podcast playlist | Square image | 1:1 |
These are YouTube Help's current recommendations, not a promise that every YouTube surface displays the same crop. YouTube says to use JPG or PNG for custom thumbnails and lists a minimum width of 640 pixels for standard video thumbnails.
File size limits depend on the device
- Mobile uploads: up to 2 MB for video thumbnails, or 10 MB for podcast thumbnails.
- Desktop uploads: up to 50 MB for video, Shorts, and podcast thumbnails.
Use the official YouTube Help: Add custom thumbnails page as the source of truth for the current limits and account eligibility.
Is 1280 × 720 still useful?
1280 × 720 is a familiar 16:9 working canvas and may be convenient in design tools, but it is not the current maximum recommendation listed in the YouTube Help guidance referenced here. When possible, work at the largest practical 16:9 size for the destination and export in a supported format within the upload limit. Avoid repeatedly resizing a small source image upward and expecting lost detail to return.
Check the thumbnail at a small size
A technically correct canvas can still be hard to read in a feed. Reduce the image and inspect it at a small preview size. If the subject disappears, text blends into the background, or several elements compete for attention, simplify the composition. This is a visual check, not a guarantee of CTR.
Try the mobile-feed thumbnail preview tool. It processes the selected image in your browser and does not upload it.
Before you export
- Confirm whether the destination is a standard video, a Short, or a podcast playlist.
- Use the right aspect ratio: 16:9, 9:16, or 1:1.
- Keep the main subject and any essential text away from the edges where different surfaces may crop.
- Save as JPG or PNG and check the final file size.
- Open the exported file once to confirm it is not corrupted or unexpectedly cropped.
